Liquid Damage Repair

Liquid Damage Repair

We hear something similiar to this all the time:

Customer: “I was just at the coffeeshop and I bumped my cup. Coffee went flying everywhere. All over me, all over the top of the table, and INTO MY LAPTOP! I shut it down and unplugged it. Turned it over to dump the coffee out. But, I’m afraid to turn it on again…”

It is a common scenario, that happens daily around the world.

Some liquid: coffee, milk, water, whatever gets dumped onto a laptop keyboard.

What do you do? How can you mitigate damage?

First off, try to keep liquids away from laptops.

If you do spill a liquid into a laptop do the following:

Getting Liquid out of a laptop

  1. Turn off the machine.
  2. Turn it upside down.
  3. Unplug any usb mice or other peripherals.
  4. Unplug the power adapter if you have it plugged into AC.
  5. If the unit has a removable battery, take it out.
  6. Use paper towel or clean cloth to clean as much of the spill as you can.
  7. Look at the keyboard, make sure any liquid is poured out of the keyboard enclosure.
  8. Get to a computer repair shop as soon as possible.

If it’s not possible to take the machine into a repair shop right away, you need to:

  • If you have a fan, like an oscillating fan or box fan, set it set one up so that it blows into the machine to get the liquid to dry.
  • Get to a computer repair shop as soon as possible.
  • DO NOT TRY TO TURN IT ON.

Yes, you can go online and search to find advice on how to handle the problem.

However we don’t recommend that you try to take the laptop apart by yourself. They are somewhat delicate. You have to take out certain screws, pry off the case, then try to figure out what to do next. If you pry it apart the wrong way, things do break.
